Student interns developing local sports hall of fame

Seniors working on intern project

Men’s Basketball players Bershard Edwards ’23 and Mena Yacoub ’23, who are both involved in a semester-long academic internship at Troup County Parks and Recreation, are not only building their resumes, but also providing the groundwork for a Troup County Sports Hall of Fame.

“We came up with the idea through Parks and Recreation Director Lance Dennis,” Yacoub said. “We are researching the achievements of Troup County athletes who will be added to the hall of fame.”

Yacoub said he and Edwards are conducting interviews with recreation officials from Georgia counties that have a similar group.

“We are asking questions like ‘How many inductors do you take per year?’ and ‘How did you go about selecting your board members?’ Yacoub said.”

When they are not working on their project, Edwards and Yacoub are facilitating the local recreation, middle school, high school and college games that are held at the recreation center and Callaway Stadium. They also run the scoreboard and help with referee assistance.

Dennis explained what he looks for in student interns.

“We look for individuals that are personable and dedicated to making whatever task they are assigned a success,” he said. “We have been extremely pleased with the work ethic of these students.”

To help establish a relationship with the local recreation department, Dr. Clay Bolton, Associate Professor of Sports Management, set up a meeting with Dennis back in August.

“We talked about working closely together and making certain that our sports management students had an opportunity to be involved in everything they do, especially on the sports side, such as youth soccer, little league, hosting tennis tournaments, etc.,” Dr. Bolton said. “My hope is that this is just the beginning of more partnerships between the college and Troup County Parks and Recreation.”

Bolton said volunteer and internship opportunities are critical to students who want to work in the sports industry.

“Students are encouraged to add to their resume every semester, every summer with various types of professional and local experiences,” he said.

Edwards and Yacoub said their internships are a stepping stone to their future careers.

“My plan is to work with a major sports program in operations,” Edwards said. “This will show that I am able to run operations on a smaller level and that I am ready for the big stage.”

“My plan after graduation is to pursue a professional basketball career and start a high school travel basketball team,” Yacoub said.
